Simulation Project Title Dendritic integration of granular bursts by Purkinje cells.
Type of model Multi-compartmental model single cell
Description Purkinje cells provide the only output from the cerebellar cortex. Via their extensive dendritic tree, these cells integrate excitatory inputs from a large number of granule cells. It has been recently reported that individual granule cells emit bursts of spikes, and not only single spikes as believed so far. The aim of my project is to study the effect of these bursts on the integration properties of Purkinje cells using an available multi-compartmental model (eg De Schutter & Bower 94).
Why complementary My present research activity consists in a mathematical analysis of the network activity in the cerebellum. The individual cells are modelled as single-compartement integrate and fire neurons. Studying a detailed multi-compartement model of a cerebellar cell will allow me to assess the validity of our simplified description, and in particular to examine the effect of dendritic structure and complex spikes on the summation of inputs.
