Simulation Project Title Coding of Naturalistic Stimuli in the somatosensory system.
Type of model Systems model
Description It is accepted that the representation of information in the cortex is carried out by the joint activity of neural ensembles. My study will explore neural correlation, and their influence on information coding. By looking at simultaneously-recorded neurons in a rat's somatosensory barrel cortex, I will use (a) information theoretic analysis, to observe the effects of correlated activity on naturalistic stimuli coding; and (b) simulated neurons to reconstruct stimuli from neurons' spike trains.
Why complementary This project will involve the use of sophisticated statistical and modeling methods the better to interpret data collected in the course of my PhD research, hopefully to arrive at insights concerning the coding strategies used by sensory neurons at different stages of information processing in response to naturalistic stimuli.
