Simulation Project Title Remapping in the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex.
Type of model Compartmental model based network model
Description Since EC stabilizes faster than HPC in novel envrionments, grid cells probably drive the generation of new HPC representations. To maintain stable grid cells, models of grid-cell formation implicate that in familiar environments place cells update the phase of grid cells. Building on these models, I would like to model the dynamics between the two networks in the setup of new maps (learning rules or comp.net.) and in remapping (retrieving a stored map).
Why complementary The project would serve as a frame for my experimental data by showing how plasticity between grid cells and place cells contribute to establish coherent maps in the two areas or if connections between them can be hard-wired. In addition, it can help to distinguish between current models of the formation of grid cells and place cells and bridge models at different stages of processing. The project would therefore provide valuable insights to the field of spatial memory and navigation.
