Eleventh Annual Dynamical Neuroscience Satellite Symposium:  Neuronal Variability and Noise

Thursday and Friday, November 6-7, 2003
Preceding the 33rd Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience
Wyndham Canal Place Hotel, Ballroom II
New Orleans, LA

Neural signals are extremely variable, and harnessing the rich content of these signals is at the heart of contemporary neuroscience research.  This meeting will address the question, how do we interpret neural variability and make use of it?  Specifically, we will focus on three areas of current research.  First, what is the origin of neural variability?  We will ex-amine this issue at different neural organization levels ranging from signal units to local field potentials to fMRIs.

Second, how do we analyze multi-channel recordings?  Here we will review and evaluate techniques that enable network based analysis and information-theoretic understanding of neural pat-terns.  Third, can neural variability be turned into a rich source of useful applications?  We will  bring together a select group of experts in various aspects of neural data analysis to assess the current state of the field and provide insights into the development and application of new data analytic tools.

Invited Speakers Include:

Frances Chance, Mingzhou Ding, Chares Gray, Charlotte Gruner, Randy McIntosh, Miguel Nicolelis, Steven Schiff, Charles Schroeder, Nitish Thakor, Jonathan Victor, John White, Matt Wilson & Jonathan Wolpaw

Special Keynote Address:  Catherine Carr

Poster sessions will be held during the second day of the meeting.  Program agenda may be accessed via the NIMH website located at:  http://www.nimh.nih.gov/diva/meetings.cfm
