PhD student position Statistics Research Group of the Institute for
Mathematics at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The group participates in the research project Computational Analysis of
Spatiotemporal Patterns of Activity in Neuronal Networks (CASPAN), a
project supported by the Dutch NWO Program Computational Life Sciences.
Within the CASPAN research team there is a vacancy for a 4-year PhD
student position.

Summary

Information processing in the brain is based on spatiotemporal patterns
of electrical activity in neuronal networks. Recently introduced
experimental techniques allow the monitoring of these patterns in great
detail by simultaneously recording of neuronal activity from a large
number of locations in the network (e.g., in cortical brain slices and
cultured neuronal networks). In order to be able to analyze and
interpret the flood of data these new techniques produce, we intend to
develop the appropriate mathematical and statistical methods for
analyzing spatiotemporal patterns of neuronal activity.

PhD job description

The aim of this subproject is the development of statistical methods for
the analysis and comparison of experimentally observed spatiotemporal
neuronal activity patterns.

Requirements: The candidate for the PhD research position should have a
strong mathematical background and statistical specialization.
Candidates preferably have a degree in mathematics or statistics, or in
one of the natural sciences, and a strong interest in biological
applications.

Job conditions: The position will be at the Vrije Universiteit, 50 % in
the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Exact Sciences, and 50 % in
the Experimental Neurophysiology Department, Faculty of Earth and Life
Sciences.

Inquiries: More information about the PhD-student position can be
obtained from Mathisca de Gunst (degunst@cs.vu.nl
<mailto:degunst@cs.vu.nl>). Letters of application, including a CV and a
list of courses plus their grades, to: Dr. Mathisca de Gunst, Department
of Mathematics, Faculty of Sciences, Vrije Universiteit, De Boelelaan
1081a, 1081 HV Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Further information can be obtained from the Project's website
www.neurodynamics.nl <http://www.neurodynamics.nl/>.
