PHD SCHOLARSHIP IN THEORETICAL NEUROBIOLOGY
A PhD scholarship is offered to carry out collaborative research with
the University of California at San Francisco into modelling the
relationship between electrical and haemodynamic measures of human
brain activity.
A candidate with a strong interest in the mathematical modelling of
biological systems is required to contribute to the development of
theoretical approaches to understanding the dynamical relationship
between the human electroencephalogram (EEG) and the BOLD (Blood Oxygen
Level Dependent) response measured using fMRI (functional Magnetic
Resonance Imaging). The articulation of this relationship is at the
forefront of current approaches to understanding brain function.
Candidates will require a first class honours in either physics,
applied mathematics or engineering science. Because this project will
be primarily concerned with the development, analysis and
solution/simulation of systems of ordinary and partial differential
equations candidates should have some background in dynamical systems
theory and numerical analysis as well as experience in either C,
Fortran, Mathematica or MATLAB programming. There will also be
opportunities to be involved in the collection and analysis of
simultaneously recorded fMRI and EEG data.
The scholarship stipend is for a period of 3 years, with a possible
extension of 6 months and is worth AUD$ 18 484 per annum (tax free)
excluding annual indexation and allowances. Limited funds are
available to assist with relocation expenses. Candidates with an APA
are also invited to apply for a PhD position on this project. Closing
