Brain Mechanisms of Attention: Biological and Computational Approaches

From July 18th 2005 to July 22nd 2005 in Soria, Spain

Keywords: Cognitive/computational neuroscience, Neurophysiology, Cognitive
psychology

Description

The interplay between computational and experimental approaches to the
Neurosciences is proving to be a fruitful and promising synergistic
interaction in the quest to understand the mechanisms of brain function. This
relationship is especially critical when exploring the realm of higher
cognitive functions, where controlled, reductionist experimental methods are
limited by the holistic nature of the phenomena. In this course we will
present the state-of-the-art in the field of top-down selective attention
research, emphasizing the interplay between a wide range of experimental
approaches and related computational interpretations. Lecturers in the course
come from renowned Spanish and foreign research institutions and, taken
together, they represent all the range of relevant expertise:
neurophysiological, imaging, neuropsychological, psychophysical,
computational and even virtual reality approaches. The course is organized so
as to stimulate the interaction between speakers and students throughout its
duration. In addition, the active participation of students through short
presentations of their related projects will be encouraged. The course is
mainly addressed to postgraduate and doctoral students and to post-doctoral
researchers interested in the field of selective attention from any possible
approach. Confirmed speakers: John H. Reynolds, Alfonso Renart, Sabine
Kastner, Gustavo Deco, Jochen Braun, Ranulfo Romo, Xiao-Jing Wang, Salvador
Soto-Faraco, Sophie Deneve, Robert D. Rafal, Mel Slater, Mavi Sanchez-Vives,
Albert Compte. Course fee: 120 euros (includes lunches).
