Vacancy for a Scientific Programmer, University of Sheffield, UK

From: Kevin Gurney (k.gurney@sheffield.ac.uk)
Date: Tue Nov 22 2005 - 11:05:07 CET

JOB TITLE: Scientific Programmer

BRIEF OUTLINE: A scientific programming and
software management post is available working
with the Adaptive Behaviour Research Group
(ABRG). The appointee will be dealing with
software development and integration for an
EU-funded project. The successful candidate will
be required to develop and maintain software to
solve the integration problems that arise when
multiple models are required to run in parallel
as part of a complete control system. This
involves: (i) establishing appropriate interfaces
between models operating at different levels of
abstraction and between model neural systems and
robot sensor and motor mechanisms (real or
simulated); (ii) management of computing cluster
usage, including the organisation of efficient
distribution of computations across available
processors; (iii) management of software
libraries developed by the group.

The appointee will join a growing
inter-disciplinary team (more than a dozen
permanent and contract research staff) with an
international track record in neuroscience,
computational neuroscience, and biomimetic
robotics. Since 1995, the ABRG has published over
sixty articles in international journals and
conference proceedings, including recent articles
in Nature Neuroscience, Neural Networks,
Biological Cybernetics, Proceedings of the Royal
Society, Neuroscience, and Trends in
Neuroscience. The ABRG is currently funded on a
variety of research projects sponsored by the
EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research
Council), the European Union Framework 6
Programme, and the Wellcome Trust.

Applicants should have a good knowledge of
programming (preferred languages C, C++, MatLab)
and some background in software design and
management. The post is part-time, working 0.5%
FTE and is available for a minimum of 3 years.
There is the possibility of studying for a higher
degree involving computational neuroscience
modelling alongside the appointment.
