NEW DIRECTIONS IN COMPUTATIONAL MORPHOLOGY
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts

Organizers: Gwen Jacobs, Ainat Rogel and Jerry Schneider

Place: MIT, Brain and Cognitive Science (just across the street from CNS96),

Date: July 13, 1996 (one day before CNS96) (**)

>>> Deadline for Abstracts: March 15, 1996 <<<

THEME:

There is an increasing appreciation of detailed morphological
descriptions of neuronal networks for understanding development
of neurons as well as the relationships between structure and
function. Research spans all levels of functional organization,
from the structural analysis of single ion channels to large
scale mapping of brain activity using fMRI and PET.

Technological advances in 3-D reconstruction techniques, confocal
microscopy, optical imaging and image processing have provided
exciting new ways to view and analyse neuronal structures.
A number of simulation techniques are being used to analyze
the branching structure of individual neurons as well as large
networks, and to model the developmental events among populations
of neurons.

Despite the advances in techniques, there are still many difficult
problems to solve. The goal of this workshop is to bring together a
group of researchers to discuss the role of computational approach
to neuronal morphology in understanding functional properties or
development of neural networks.

TOPICS OF INTEREST:
The major areas of interest include but are not limited to the following
topics, as they relate to computational morphology (new topics are wellcome):

- Data-collection: Microscope -- computer interfaces.
3D reconstruction programs.
Automatic image recognition.
Image processing and statistical analysis.

- Models: Neuronal developmental models.
Morphological descriptive models.
physiological models.
