Media Demonstration (5:00 pm - 6:00 pm, ECC Foyer)

Wine Tasting Contest - man versus the electronic nose! Wally Read, 1996
IEEE President, will be Master of Ceremonies. Tom Cain, 1995 IEEE
President is organizing this event. The demonstration will take place
immediately following the Workshop in the ECC. CNN and other Atlanta media
have been invited to attend. A local wine expert is being sought to test
his/her sense of taste against the electronic nose machines (local papers,
television stations and exclusive restaurants are being contacted to
identify a willing expert). Other contestants will be selected from the
audience. The hotel will provide wine glasses and a selection of wines.
The details of the wine tasting contest will be finalized once the local
expert has been identified. The current plan being considered is to select
two cabernet sauvignon and two merlot brands from the hotel's wine list.
The E-Nose machines will be allowed to sample the four selections during
the afternoon to build their learning databases. The human contestants
will be allowed to taste each of the four wines at the beginning of the
demonstration. Then, all contestants (humans and machines) will be
presented an unknown sample by a hotel waiter. If a contestant (human or
machine) makes an incorrect identification, he/she/it drops out of the
contest. When two rounds of "correct" choices have been made by all
surviving contestants, the demonstration will end and all remaining
contestants will be given an award (a certificate for having competed
against the electronic nose).
