A postdoctoral position is available to study how the properties
of synapses and dendrites interact to determine neuronal output
in the mammalian CNS. This issue will be addressed using two
complementary approaches: patch-clamp experiments in brain slices
and simulations of synaptic integration using compartmental models.
Applicants should have experience in electrophysiology and/or neuronal
modelling (preferably both). The position is funded by the Wellcome Trust
for up to three years. Salary is competitive and starting date is flexible

The University of Sydney Chair of Applied Mathematics School of Mathematics

Applications are invited for a Chair of Applied Mathematics. The successful
candidate will be a distinguished and active researcher in an area of applied
mathematics relevant to the School's interests, able to provide academic
leadership in both teaching and research in the discipline and possess
demonstrated administrative and management skills. A track record in
attracting research funds and postgraduate students is also required.
The School of Mathematics and Statistics is one of the largest in Australia in
terms of staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students. It has active
research groups spanning a wide range of applied mathematics including
biomathematics, financial mathematics, industrial mathematics, nonlinear
equations, astrophysical and geophysical fluid dynamics. Applicants should
have mathematical modelling interests that would strengthen at least one of
these areas, but preference may be given to applicants with interests in
biomathematics or financial mathematics.
The School has a long-standing involvement in mathematical computing and
computer-based teaching in applied mathematics. It has recently completed the
re-equipping of its computer laboratories and staff network with Digital
Alphastations. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to
the use of computers in teaching and research.
Applicants should have a high level of communication and interpersonal skills
and the ability to enhance the links between the School and cognate fields,
departments and organisations.
The new Professor will be expected to serve as Head of School if required.
The position is offered on a tenured basis. It is expected that the appointee
will begin duties on, or as soon as possible after, 1 July 1999.
The salary associated with the position is currently $A89,355 per annum
(increasing to $A92,036 per annum on 1 October 1998).
