POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN MULTI-UNIT RECORDING AND ANALYSIS
In the laboratory of Jim Bower
Division of Biology
California Institute of Technology
A postdoctoral position is available immediately on a multidisciplinary
project investigating the relationship between multi-single-neuron activity
and cortical oscillations in the somatosensory cortex of rats. The
multi-unit experiments involve recordings obtained using advanced
silicon-based electrodes developed by our laboratory in collaboration with
Greg Kovacs at Stanford University (Kewley, et al., (1997) Plasma-etched
neural probes, Sensors and Actuators A, 58: 27-35.). The electrodes allow
multi-single neurons to be recorded at multiple known depths of
somatosensory cortex simultaneously. Analysis of the data will be
undertaken in the context of a realistic network model being developed
within our laboratory using GENESIS. The goals of this effort are both
technical and scientific. Scientifically, we seek to determine how
somatosensory information is processed through different depths of the
cerebral cortex as well as the relationship between this processing and
intrinsic cortical oscillations. Technically, we are developing software
to analyze multi-unit data in the context of realistic network models. All
technical aspects of this project are fully funded for multiple years.
We seek someone primarily interested in neuronal computation in
cortical circuits. Our laboratory specializes in cross-training modelers
and experimentalists, although preference will be given to applicants with
some experience in both. Position is initially for one year and renewable
depending on progress. Initially, send CV, statement of professional
interests and goals, and names of three references via email to Jim Bower
(jbower@bbb.caltech.edu). Additional information on this and other projects
in our laboratory can be obtained from the listed URLs.
