The Mathematical Research Branch of the Diabetes Institute, N. I. H., has
an opening for a post-doctoral fellow to work under the direction of Dr.
Arthur Sherman. The position can begin at any time, but hopefully by
Summer or Fall, 1999. All applications received prior to January 1, 1999
will be guaranteed consideration.

The research program is centered on modeling at a cellular or cell network
level of electrical activity, calcium handling, and secretion. Current
areas of interest include neurotransmitter release, neuroendocrine cells
of the hypothalamus and pituitary, and insulin-secreting pancreatic
beta-cells. Mathematical foci include dynamical systems, coupled
oscillators, stochastic models, and partial differential equations, with a
strong component of numerical computation. Other areas, such as
immunology, especially in relation to Type I diabetes, are also of
potential interest. Final determination of projects will depend on the
interests and degree of independence of the candidate.

Previous post-docs in the group have come from a variety of fields,
including mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, biophysics and
physiology. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated interest in
biological problems and in working closely with experimentalists. This is
a full-time research position with no teaching requirement.

You can learn more about MRB at our Web page, http://mrb.niddk.nih.gov.

Candidates must have received their Ph. D. degree within the last five
years. Acceptance implies a mutual commitment for two years, which may be
extended to a third year or beyond.

N. I. H. is an equal opportunity employer. Minorities and women are
especially encouraged to apply. Both U. S. and non-U. S. citizens are
eligible.

In order to apply send a CV, a one-page statement of research interests,
and three letters of recommendation to:
