The Biomedical Models of Cellular and Physiological Systems in Health and
Disease team of the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIms)
invites applications for several graduate student and postdoctoral
positions to work with an interdisciplinary team of mathematicians,
physiologists, and biotechnological companies on several projects. Duties
include research, liason between scientists and company representatives,
and advancement of the goals of our projects. Some teaching in the
Department of Mathematics may be available/required. Additional

Potential graduate students and postdoctoral fellows should have a strong
background in mathematical and computational skills and/or in cellular
physiology or molecular biology. Strengths in the fields of
bioinformatics, biochemical pathways, neurophysiology, biotechnology will
be an asset. A Ph.D. or equivalent and evidence of high potential for
research are required for postdoctoral candidates. All qualified persons
are encouraged to apply.
Successful applicants will be based primarily at the University of British
Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, with some options available at Simon Fraser
University in Vancouver, Canada, or at the University of Alberta in
Edmonton, Canada. These positions start January - September, 1999,
subject to the availability of funds. Positions are for one year, with
expected renewal for a second year. The salary will be commensurate with
experience and research record.
These projects of PIms are funded by the Networks of Centers of Excellence
program through the Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex
Systems (MITACS) network and by industrial sponsors.
