ICANN 99, the annual conference of the European Neural Network Society
held in conjunction with the IEE conference on Artificial Neural
Networks, is taking place in Edinburgh, UK, from 07-10 September 1999.
Due to numerous requests for bringing the ICANN 99 submission procedure
into alignment with earlier years, the deadline for submissions has
been revised to Friday 12 March 1999.
The extension of the deadline for submissions means that the deadline
for notification of acceptance of papers has been changed to 12 April
1999. We apologise for this alteration. However the participants and
delegates of ICANN 99 will benefit, without compromise to the
reviewing and publication process.
The conference is of 4 days duration, starting with a tutorial day.
Immediately following the conference, on Saturday 11 September, a day of
informal `post NIPS' style workshops is planned.
ICANN 99 aims to bring together researchers from academia, industry
and commerce in the broad field of neural computation, spanning
disciplines from computational neurobiology to engineering in what is
the largest European event ever to be held in this field. It is
intended to create a focus for European research and to foster
dialogue between academic researchers and industrial/commercial users
of a still-developing technology.
The conference encompasses work in the following areas:
Theory and Algorithms
Neurobiology and Computational Neuroscience
Cognitive Modelling
Industrial, Commercial and Medical Applications
Hardware and Neuromorphic Engineering
Control, Robotics and Adaptive Behaviour
We are assembling a strong list of plenary speakers for ICANN 99, with
the following having already agreed to speak:
Geoffrey Hinton (London)
Richard Morris (Edinburgh)
Rod Goodman (California)
Wulfram Gerstner (Lausanne)
Mahesan Niranjan (Sheffield)
If you are intending to submit a paper, and have not already done so,
please refer to the official ICANN 1999 web page for submission
information. Any authors who entered a submission prior to the
newly extended deadline may resubmit.

for proposals, can be found at:

ICANN 99 will take place at the University of Edinburgh, in the very
centre of Edinburgh. There is reasonable hotel and other
accommodation available in the vicinity of the conference, with many
bars, cafes, restaurants, museums and art galleries nearby. The
conference is scheduled to take place immediately after the Edinburgh
International Festival.
We have prepared a local information web page for ICANN 99, featuring
useful links to accommodation and travel information, entertainment
during your stay in Edinburgh, photographs of the city, etc. This can
be found at http://anc.ed.ac.uk/ICANN99/
You may also wish to note that in the week preceding the conference a
workshop on Neuromorphic Engineering is taking place in Stirling from
03-05 September.
See http://www.cs.stir.ac.uk/EWNS2/ for more information.
Finally, the European Neural Network Society has kindly offered 20
studentships of 250 US dollars to ENNS student members to attend
ICANN 99. For information on the application procedure, please contact
Professor David Willshaw by sending e-mail to <fiona@anc.ed.ac.uk>.
We do hope to see you in September at ICANN 99.
Best wishes.
