STUDENTSHIP IN
"Distributed model of brainstem circuitry underlying eyeblink conditioning."

A BBSRC Research Committee Studentship is available for three years from
1st October 1999, in the general area of LEARNING AND MEMORY. The project
will involve collaborative research between
Dr. Paul Dean, Department of Psychology, University of Sheffield and Dr.
Christopher H. Yeo, Department of Anatomy, University College London. The
project is to set up a working model of eyeblink control circuitry that
represents
neural and muscle activity at the single unit level. The model will enable
the integration of behavioural and electrophysiological findings,
including those resulting from cerebellar manipulation. It will therefore
assist the testing of hypotheses concerning the sites and characteristics
of synaptic plasticity in classical conditioning of this model system.

The position will be located in Sheffield with Dr. Dean where the student's
training and computational work will take place, whilst the behavioural
and electrophysiological aspects of the project will be carried out in
London under the direction of Dr. Yeo.

Applicants will require a 2:1 or better in a relevant subject and should
have a keen interest in computational neuroscience. Full training in the
techniques required for the project, including programming and
electrophysiology, will be given. As this is a BBSRC Research Committee
studentship, an enhanced stipend (7020 pounds pa) will apply. Applicants
must have a 'relevant connection' with the UK, which means amongst other
things that the candidate should have been resident in the UK throughout
the three year period preceding the date of application.

Further particulars and application forms are available from Ms Liz
Compton, Faculty of Science, Department of Psychology, University of
Sheffield, Western Bank, Sheffield, S10 2TP, telephone 0114 2226543 or
email L.Compton@Sheffield.ac.uk.

Potential applicants wishing to discuss studentship informally are invited
to contact Paul Dean on 0114 222 6521 or email: P.Dean@Sheffield.ac.uk
