Deadline: Open until filled
Project Title: Cognitive State Assessment based on Physiological Data
The goal of this project is to design a human-machine interface
that uses psychophysiological measures (e.g. electroencephalogram
(EEG), blink rates, eye closure durations) to assess cognitive
states of machine operators and to deliver visual and/or auditory
information to the operators during periods when their concentration
or alertness decline. Many studies of vigilance research have
confirmed that, for most or all monitoring equipment with
operators engaging in monotonous tasks, maintaining a constant
level of alertness is rare or impossible. Alertness deficits
may have catastrophic consequences in many working environments
including plant process control and transportation operations.
During the past few years, in conjunction with Scott Makeig at
Naval Health Research Center and Terrence J. Sejnowski at Salk
Institute, we have made advances in EEG, electrooculographic
(EOG) and eye activity analyses that support the feasibility of
accurately estimating, continuously and in near real-time shifts
in an operator's alertness level (Makeig & Inlow, 1995; 1996;
Jung et al., 1997; Van Orden, Jung & Makeig, 2000).

The successful candidates will continue to optimize alertness
monitoring systems and implement them in transportable devices
with many potential practical applications.
Qualifications:
Background in signal processing, machine learning
algorithms, and pattern recognition is desirable.
Matlab and C programming skills are required.
Our Lab:
Successful candidates will join the Neuroengineering Laboratory at the
Institute for Neural Computation. The Institute is an
interdisciplinary organized research unit at UCSD directed by Terrence
J. Sejnowski. The 45 faculty members in the Institute represent 14
research disciplines, including neuroscience, visual science,
cognitive science, mathematics, economics and social science, and
computer engineering, and addresses the twin scientific and engineering
challenges of understanding how humans function at the neural and
cognitive levels and solve major technological problems related to
neural network implementations (see http://inc.ucsd.edu/). The
Neuroengineering Laboratory currently consists of three research
faculty who work with postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and
visiting scientists, in collaboration with other researchers in
electrical and computer engineering, cognitive science, neurosciences,
as well as with industry.
