From: Idan Segev (idan@lobster.ls.huji.ac.il)
Date: Mon Apr 17 2000 - 13:01:35 MDT
Position: Ph.D or Post-Doc
P.I.: Kevan Martin (Zurich); Idan Segev (Jerusalem)
Organization: Institute for Neuroinformatics (Zurich) and
Interdisciplinary Center for Neural Computation
(Jerusalem).
Deadline: Open until filled
Project Title: Operation of local circuits in the visual cortex
The project would be to pursue the operation of the local circuits in
the visual cortex through simulations of intra-cortical circuits
based on detailed anatomical and physiological data obtained in cat
visual cortex. Using detailed modeling approach, the project would
examine in particular how the spatiotemporal structure of cortical
receptive fields is derived from the underlying dynamical circuits.
This include synaptic dynamics, neuron connectivity and the different
neuron types composing the studied circuit. Please visit
http://www.ini.unizh.ch/ (for Kevan Martin) and
http://lobster.ls.huji.ac.il/~idan.
Qualifications:
Background in neurobiology and in computational techniques.
Programming skill in C programming and in Matlab are desirable.
The labs involved:
This project as the results of the ongoing collaboration between the
experimental group of Kevan Martin in Zurich and the theoretical
group of Idan Segev in Jerusalem. Previous collaboration between
these groups yield new insights regarding the capability of
reconstructed cortical pyramidal neurons to compute the velocity of
visual motion (Anderson et al., Nature Neursoci.2:820-824, 1999). The
candidate can choose where he/she wants to base his research
activity; frequent visits to the other group will be then encouraged.
Both the Institute for Neuroinformatics (Zurich) and the
Interdisciplinary Center for Neural Computation (Jerusalem) provide
intellectually and culturally very stimulating environments. Both
consist of a large body of faculty members from a variety of research
disciplines (neuroscience, cognitive science, phsyics, computer
science and engineering).
