COMPUTATIONAL NEUROSCIENCE POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE POSITION

The Department of Mathematics at Arizona State University invites
applications for a two-year computational neuroscience Postdoctoral Research
Associate position, beginning in the 2001-2002 academic year commencing
August 16, 2001 working with Professor Gregory Smith. All candidates are
required to have received a Ph.D. in mathematics, computer science,
bioengineering, neuroscience, biophysics, or a closely related area, and
have received their doctorate within three years of the start of the
appointment. Candidates must have demonstrated potential for excellence in
teaching at the undergraduate level (teaching load consist of one course per
year) and evidence of quality research in the area of
mathematical/computational neuroscience where strong numerical/analytical
skills are essential.

Evidence of quality research in neural computational modeling at the
cellular or systems level and working knowledge of the following computer
software packages: XPP, AUTO, C, LATEX and MATLAB and the UNIX operating
system are desired.

Professor Greg Smith has recently been awarded an NSF grant from the
Division of Integrative Biology and Neuroscience to use a computational
approach to investigate the function of visually-responsive inhibitory
neurons located in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN). The successful
candidate will work with Dr. Smith on this project and ongoing
mathematical/computational neuroscience research, some of which is being
performed in collaboration with experimental visual neuroscientist S. Murray
Sherman (SUNY, Stony Brook) and theorist John Rinzel (New York University).
