Background :
In a recent report from the OECD MegaScience Forum (www.oecd.org/dsti/sti) the new field of neuroinformatics was defined as "the combination of neuroscience and information sciences to develop and apply advanced tools and approaches essential for a major advancement in understanding the structure and function of the brain." In the context of this and other international activities, the present workshop will discuss a possible future Knowledge Management system for all data relating to nervous system function.
Goals :
The primary goal of this workshop is to initiate a discussion about the format of a future Knowledge Management system and its implications in terms of data sharing and interdisciplinary collaboration. A second goal is to discuss and to develop guidelines for content, organization, quality control, and standards for neuroscience databases. The third goal is to ensure that national and international funding bodies be informed about and support activities in this newly emerging field. The United States and the European Union have joined forces to bring together the first larger trans-atlantic panel to initiate a broader discussion of these issues. The workshop will invite leading scientists in the Neurosciences and Information Technology domains to participate.
The meeting will be organized in a workshop style with emphasis on short presentations, panel and round table discussions, and open debates on emerging topics, leading to formulation of recommendations.
Program :
The WORKSHOP PROGRAM and other information is available at www.nesys.uio.no/Workshop.
